Paper baking cups, also known as crimped cups, cookie cups or baking cases have been in use since the 1700’s, but did not start out as the specialized product they are today. Originally a baking cup was a greased piece of paper placed in a baking pan to allow for the easy removal of cakes and was left on the cake until sold. This evolved into the modern-day paper baking cups from which the original “cupcake “derived its name.
